Using AI in crimes will now officially cost extra prison years in Russia

Just when we thought legal systems couldn't get any more bizarre, our favorite northern neighbors have decided that writing a phishing email with ChatGPT is basically the digital equivalent of bringing a rocket launcher to a fistfight.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has officially backed a proposal to tweak the country's criminal code. The brilliant plan, cooked up during a legal forum in St. Petersburg, aims to add the use of artificial intelligence as a formal aggravating circumstance for all intentional crimes.

This masterclass in legislation was originally pitched by Alexander Fyodorov, an advisor to the head of the powerful Investigative Committee. Instead of rewriting dozens of individual laws, the authorities want to simply slip a tiny amendment into Article 63 of the criminal code, making any crime automatically worse if a neural network was even looking in its direction.

However, not everyone in the government is thrilled about turning math into a prison-sentence multiplier. The Ministry of Justice previously tried to put the brakes on this tech-phobic train, pointing out that nobody actually knows how to define "artificial intelligence" in a courtroom. They warned that judges would have to hire expensive tech experts for literally every single case involving a computer, dragging out trials for years and costing a fortune.
