Bureaucrats inside FAS want to label every smart fridge as strategic AI weapons
Russian officials decided that selling a toaster with an algorithm counts as trading military-grade artificial intelligence, threatening to freeze the entire electronics market overnight.
The electronics trade association RATEK, representing giants like Huawei, DNS, and M.Video, submitted an urgent appeal to the Russian FAS. The regulator proposed amending investment law 57-FZ to designate any activity involving the creation, sale, or distribution of artificial intelligence as a strategically important sector for national security.
Under this sweeping definition, selling a basic smart TV, a vacuum cleaner, or a mid-range smartphone with background noise suppression automatically counts as trafficking in strategic AI tech. Any distributor or retailer with more than five percent foreign capital would have to seek government commission approval for every routine corporate deal, turning simple stock replenishment into a bureaucratic nightmare.
Association spokesperson Anton Guskov argued that state control should be strictly limited to massive foundational models with over one billion parameters that actually impact national infrastructure. Legal expert Oleg Popov noted that while classifying washing machines as state threats is absurd, limiting regulation solely to massive models misses specialized defense and energy software.
The bureaucratic impulse to classify consumer appliances as state secrets risks leaving store shelves completely empty while officials debate whether a smart kettle poses a sovereign threat.
