Russia to Launch 5G via MTS and MegaFon with 1% Domestic Tech

Original version · Jun 4, 2:30

Prepare your tin foil hats and dial-up modems, because the grand masters of import substitution are finally bringing fifth-generation wireless to the masses. Of course, there is a tiny, hilarious catch regarding where the actual hardware comes from.

The State Commission on Radio Frequencies decided to allocate the 4.63–4.99 GHz frequency band to major operators like VimpelCom, MTS, MegaFon, and T2. While the rest of the civilized world operates on different standardized frequencies, this unique spectrum choice means most imported smartphones will politely refuse to connect to it without some serious software hacking.

To make the transition look smooth on paper, officials are allowing "technological neutrality." This bureaucratic wizardry means operators can repurpose ancient 2G, 3G, and LTE infrastructure to broadcast a 5G signal. It is basically the tech equivalent of putting a sports car badge on a rusty tractor and hoping nobody notices the engine noise.

The highlight of the entire plan is the timeline for domestic equipment adoption. Officials demand that by late 2027, the share of Russian-made hardware in these networks must reach a staggering, monumental one percent. Apparently, finding even a single locally soldered screw is going to take a couple of years of intense search.

The roadmap climbs to 50% by 2030 and a full 100% by 2031, which is highly optimistic considering that mass production of domestic base stations currently exists only in PowerPoint slides. Geographically, the network will slowly crawl from four regional centers in 2026 to 84 cities by 2035, ensuring that most citizens will experience the future right around the time the rest of the planet moves to 10G.

In the end, this glorious digital leap looks less like a technological revolution and more like a desperate attempt to paint over outdated telecom infrastructure with patriotic colors. Watching operators try to squeeze fifth-generation speeds out of repurposed 3G towers while hunting for that elusive 1% of local microchips will surely be the greatest comedy show of the decade.

1% domestic? did they buy a chinese router and glue a local flag sticker on it?
+3 funnyThe sticker-slapping strategy is the pinnacle of modern industrial achievement in that region

lmao 5g on 3g towers is literally just 3g with a fancy icon on your phone screen. clown show
+3 funnyCalling it a clown show is an insult to clowns, who at least know how to perform their tricks properly
