Russia's Top Kids' Hospital Dumps Western Tech for VMmanager and Astra Linux
In a move that surprises absolutely no one, a leading Russian medical center has ditched global virtualization standards to embrace the local Astra Linux ecosystem. It's time to see if Kraftway servers and VMmanager can handle real healthcare.
The Dmitry Rogachev National Medical Research Center recently completed a forced migration of its IT infrastructure at the Russkoye Pole rehabilitation facility. Facing the sudden exodus of international software vendors, the center opted for ISPsystem's VMmanager to keep its virtual machines running.
Hardware-wise, the facility opted for Kraftway TS 3100 series servers, which are conveniently registered in the national industrial equipment database. The entire transition, including setup and testing, was managed by the integrator 7pro and wrapped up in about a month.
Beyond just the hypervisor, the center has integrated Astra Linux for its OS backbone and the ALD Pro directory service for centralized management. This setup aims to maintain operational continuity while keeping the data within a strictly domestic software stack. The IT department claims the ease of the VMmanager web interface was the deciding factor for meeting their tight deadline.
While the center celebrates its new sovereign tech stack, the reality remains that long-term reliability in specialized medical environments is often measured in years of uptime, not a successful one-month deployment. Whether this shift provides genuine stability or just another layer of proprietary isolation for critical healthcare data remains the biggest question of the year.
