Sennheiser adds user-swappable batteries to Momentum True Wireless 5

Original version ·

A standard screwdriver opens both the buds and the case, giving $300 in-ear monitors a realistic life beyond degraded lithium cells ahead of upcoming EU repair rules.

Sennheiser announced its flagship Momentum True Wireless 5 in-ear monitors, priced at $300. The headline change is structural: both the earbuds and their charging case feature user-replaceable batteries accessible with a screwdriver, shifting the product away from the disposable design standard in wireless audio.

The move comes as consumer electronics face tighter environmental scrutiny, notably upcoming European Union sustainability regulations that mandate serviceable power sources starting in February 2027. While larger over-ear models from brands like Fender and Glorious have begun adopting swappable cells, in-ear designs have historically resisted modular parts due to internal space constraints and ingress protection. Despite the mechanical access, the new buds maintain an IP54 dust and splash resistance rating.

Internally, the earbuds use 7mm TrueResponse drivers with support for Bluetooth 6.0 and Snapdragon Sound, enabling high-resolution playback up to 24-bit/96kHz via aptX Adaptive. Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking and Dolby Atmos are supported alongside a dedicated low-latency gaming profile.

Battery life is rated at up to 12 hours on a single charge, with the case extending playback to 40 hours and offering Qi wireless charging. Voice calls use an eight-sensor setup combining six microphones with two bone-conduction accelerometers routed through machine-learning noise suppression.
