Sony patents a way to flood PlayStation loading screens with ads and AI video

Original version · May 28, 2:30

Just when everyone thought fast SSDs saved us from waiting, Sony found a way to weaponize those brief seconds of quiet. Get ready to watch AI-generated clutter on your next PlayStation.

A newly published patent reveals a system that turns those brief, peaceful moments of waiting into a picture-in-picture content feed. The technology aims to hijack both menu navigation and multiplayer matchmaking screens, filling them with social media clips, gameplay highlights, and real-time stats of other players. Because God forbid a player spends three seconds in silence with their own thoughts instead of consuming content.

An artificial intelligence engine will calculate exactly how many seconds of waiting are left and dynamically select a video clip of the perfect length. If a Fortnite lobby loads faster than expected, the video will gracefully fade out, ensuring the system doesn't accidentally prevent anyone from spending money on virtual skins. The patent explicitly notes the system can be used to display targeted ads for in-game purchases or entirely different titles.

This monetization dream follows a string of other highly ambitious patents from Sony, including customizable controllers with built-in touchscreens and personalized podcasts narrated by video game characters. The company also previously patented an AI assistant called Ghost Player to help users pass difficult levels, apparently preparing for a future where humans don't even need to play the games they buy.

While patents rarely transition into actual products, the trend of turning premium hardware into ad billboards is getting harder to ignore. If this makes its way into the next console generation, players might look back at the days of boring, silent loading screens as the golden era of gaming.
