Sony just gave the base PS5 an AI facelift, so keep your cash

Original version ·

Forget the PS5 Pro hype train. Sony just dropped QSSR, an AI-powered upscaling tech for the vanilla PlayStation 5. It’s basically a diet version of the big-boy tech, and it’s hitting Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei first.

The new QSSR tech is the result of a project called Amethyst, a collaboration between Sony and AMD. By trimming down the heavy-duty neural network used in the Pro model's PSSR, they’ve managed to squeeze AI-driven upscaling onto the original console's hardware. The update landed on October 1st, specifically targeting image reconstruction from lower resolutions to make things look sharper without melting the system's guts.

Developers at Insomniac claim this makes city environments in Marvel’s Wolverine pop with better detail, while Sucker Punch reports crisper character models in Ghost of Yōtei. Users will find QSSR as a toggle in the graphics menu, allowing for a bit of extra polish on the fly. However, this isn't a magical performance patch that turns an aging console into a top-tier rig. The company is already reminding everyone that the Pro version’s tech remains the superior solution for those who love their pixels perfectly rendered.

While the tool will eventually be available to all developers, it won't just magically apply to the entire back catalog of games overnight. Each studio will need to manually implement it, meaning the dream of an instant, system-wide graphical overhaul remains just that—a dream. It’s a classic corporate play: give the base users a shiny new toy just enough to keep them from hitting the checkout button on the PS5 Pro, while keeping the best performance hidden behind a paywall.
