SpaceX Now Owns More Satellites in Orbit Than the Rest of Humanity Combined

Original version ·

While everyone was busy arguing on the ground, one guy quietly bought up the entire night sky. It turns out we aren't just looking at stars anymore; we're looking at a giant flying corporate billboard that is growing faster than space junk.

Analyst Christian Keil from Astranis Space Technologies dug through the latest data from Jonathan's Space Report and found that SpaceX has officially pushed 15,262 satellites into orbit by June 2026. To put that in perspective, the rest of the planet—including every superpower, military, and rival company since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957—has managed a grand total of 15,138.

Almost all of these metallic birds were shot into the atmosphere over the last six years, riding shotgun on Falcon 9 rockets like tech bros in an Uber Pool. The bulk of this orbital invasion belongs to Starlink and its military sibling Starshield.

Right now, about 12,400 of these satellites are actively beaming internet down to Earth, which translates to a mind-boggling 60% of all active satellites currently spinning around our globe. Elon Musk's space company has already colonised roughly 70% of the prime real estate in orbit, specifically the sweet-spot altitudes between 500 and 600 kilometers.

The ultimate master plan involves parking 42,000 of these things above our heads, which is great for rural internet but less great for anyone worried about cosmic bumper cars. Each of these satellites only lives for about five to seven years, and over 1,200 of them are already dead, joining a floating graveyard of over 40,000 large debris objects.

The night sky is officially a private monopoly, and astronomers are going to have to get used to photoshopping out corporate logos from their deep-space imagery. Humanity spent decades dreaming of reaching the stars, only to end up wrapping the planet in a giant bubble wrap of disposable consumer electronics.

and what happens when a solar storm fries all of them at once? we get a rain of metal. dumbest timeline.
