New Stack Overflow questions drop below 1,000 monthly as developers turn to AI
Monthly queries on the historic developer hub have plunged to around 800, prompting the platform to retire its automated dead-question deletion scripts.
New questions submitted by users to Stack Overflow have fallen sharply, dropping below 1,000 per month according to platform statistics. Data shows 1,019 new questions in August 2026, 969 in September, and 808 during October. This represents a dramatic decline from a 2014 peak of roughly 200,000 monthly inquiries, driven by the adoption of coding assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and GitHub Copilot.
As developer traffic shifted toward conversational models that provide direct technical answers without community friction, the site's automated maintenance scripts became largely redundant. Stack Overflow announced the deactivation of its core heuristic scripts—such as RemoveDeadQuestions and RemoveAbandonedQuestions—which previously purged low-rated or unanswered posts after set time thresholds.
Founded in 2008 and once boasting over 51 million monthly active users, the platform has pivoted in response to the shift. In late 2025, the site introduced an integrated AI assistant trained on its vast archive, followed by a June 2026 platform aimed at facilitating technical knowledge exchange between autonomous AI agents.
