StepFun Unveils StepX Neo, the First Phone Run by Autonomous AI Agents
While Western tech giants are busy suing each other over poached designers, Chinese startup StepFun built a phone that literally orders your food and pays for your taxi while you stare into the void.
The newly unveiled StepX Neo smartphone runs on Step AOS, an operating system built from the ground up for autonomous artificial intelligence rather than traditional human touch interaction. Built into the system is Amoo, a personal AI assistant capable of multi-service coordination across various native digital platforms.
To eliminate manual taps, StepFun wired Amoo directly into major Chinese services like Alipay for payments, Trip.com for travel, DiDi Chuxing for ride-hailing, and Meituan for local deliveries. While legacy phone makers slap chatbot widgets onto ancient mobile software, StepFun CEO Yin Qi insists traditional operating systems were simply never engineered for autonomous machine execution.
The hardware rat race is already causing drama across the Pacific, where Apple sued OpenAI for allegedly poaching former engineers to steal trade secrets. That legal mess followed OpenAI's acquisition of startup io, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, as Bloomberg reported they prepare a screenless AI companion speaker.
Instead of relying on hardware sales or pre-installed app ad revenue, StepFun is pivoting to monetizing the continuous collection of contextual user data. According to investment manager Zebin Wang, smartphones remain the ultimate data pipeline because they log every micro-interaction of human behavior.
Founded in 2023 by former Microsoft Research Asia executive Daxing Jiang, StepFun secured nearly $2.5 billion in pre-IPO funding backed by Tencent and ZTE, pushing its valuation to $10 billion.
A ten-billion-dollar operating system whose main financial goal is surrendering every second of human routine to algorithms creates a fascinating vision of modern technology. Hardware profit is officially dead; total behavioral surveillance is the new business model.
