Finally, some genius from KAIST decided that hotel creepiness needs a tech intervention. Instead of squinting at every lamp like a paranoid detective, SweepLED uses cheap LEDs and some smart math to catch hidden lenses red-handed.
Researchers at the KAIST have unveiled SweepLED, a humble attachment that turns any standard smartphone into a professional-grade hidden camera detector. The hardware is laughably simple: a 3D-printed casing equipped with a few LEDs that costs less than $7 to produce.
Most existing gadgets rely on old-school optical reflection, which is about as reliable as a weather forecast in a hurricane. They force users to bob their heads around, hoping to catch a glint from a lens, but they get easily confused by shiny surfaces like metal or plastic. SweepLED solves this by keeping the phone stationary and flashing light from multiple angles. The system tracks the specific way camera lenses distort light due to their internal glass layers, sensors, and diaphragms.
An AI model then processes the video recording to identify those specific 'lens-like' reflections, ignoring common static shiny objects. In tests on 30 different items, the system successfully spotted cameras with 94% accuracy, processing each scan in under five seconds. This is a massive upgrade over current consumer-grade detectors, which according to a recent study from University College London, miss over half of all hidden hardware.
While this is currently an academic prototype showcased at ACM Mobisys 2026, the components are cheap enough to make this a standard smartphone accessory. The privacy battle is moving from vague fears into the realm of affordable, automated optics.
