Tesla adds 'Emergency Drive Away' to rip out your charger during a shootout

Original version ·

Because apparently, the modern EV experience now requires a 'panic-flee' mode. Tesla just released a software patch for Supercharger stations that lets you tear away from the plug if things get ugly, proving that hardware safety is so last year.

When life throws bullets your way, waiting for a software-controlled latch to release your charge cable feels like a bad joke. Tesla has introduced Emergency Drive Away in software update 2026.38.3, allowing vehicles to shift into gear and bolt even while physically tethered to a Supercharger.

Previously, safety protocols locked the connector to prevent high-voltage arcing or damage. The new mode bypasses the wait, though it comes with a glaring caveat: you are essentially ripping the hardware out by force. Tesla warns that this will absolutely destroy both the cable and your charging port, and they might even fine you for the privilege of using it.

This feature arrived following a tragic shooting at a Supercharger station in Twin Falls, Idaho. Owners had been clamoring for a quick-release solution, with some even resorting to risky third-party adapters like EVject, which Tesla previously sued over concerns about melting components.

It is truly a marvel of modern engineering when a car company’s primary feature request becomes 'how do I escape a crime scene at 100kW.' We have clearly reached the peak of the electric revolution where the most important accessory is a quick-release getaway mechanism.
