Tesla Ditches 'Full Self-Driving' Name in Europe for Just 'Assisted Driving'

Original version ·

Marketing magic finally ran headfirst into European bureaucracy: Tesla had to admit its flagship autonomous tech is just a fancy copilot.

Tesla officially bent the knee to German regulators and rebranded its long-running 'Full Self-Driving (Supervised)' package as Tesla Assisted Driving across Europe. The decision came straight out of closed-door discussions with the German Transport Ministry, where officials pointed out the rather obvious detail: software that requires a human holding the wheel is not, in fact, doing all the driving.

German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger publicly flagged the old branding as misleading, prompting the automaker to propose the name change itself to smooth over regulatory tensions. Elon Musk even hopped onto X to thank the minister personally, taking a polite detour from his usual complaints about European bureaucrats strangling innovation with red tape.

This branding retreat is a tactical move ahead of an upcoming pan-European regulatory vote, but it follows a messy trail of paper. Reports recently surfaced accusing the company of pushing dubious internal safety stats onto the Dutch vehicle authority, all while online fan armies lobbied for green lights.

Safety researchers in Brussels only added fuel to the fire after road tests revealed the system regularly ignored urban speed caps, blowing through 30 km/h zones at an average of 44 km/h more than half the time. Regulators had already forced the automaker to dial back the famous Autopilot moniker earlier this year after judges ruled it promised far more autonomy than the car actually delivered.

Slapping a humble badge on an ambitious dream shows how quickly high-flying Silicon Valley buzzwords crumble when forced to follow actual traffic laws.
