UK Hits Yandex and Wildberries Banks with New Sanctions

Original version ·

The UK’s OFSI just slapped Yandex Bank and WB Bank with fresh sanctions, because apparently, even digital shopping carts and taxi apps aren't safe from the long arm of global financial restrictions. Business as usual, or the start of the end?

The UK's Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) officially added the financial arms of Yandex and Wildberries to its sanctions list. This move freezes assets and restricts financial dealings for these entities within British jurisdiction, joining a growing list of others like Rosgosstrakh and Eurofinance Mosnarbank.

Despite the high-profile diplomatic slap on the wrist, both Yandex Bank and WB Bank are singing the same tune: everything is fine. Yandex insists that their parent company, MKPAO Yandex, remains untouched by these specific measures, while Wildberries claims their internal operations are purely domestic and immune to the whims of London bureaucrats.

The disconnect between international financial isolation and the insistence that local operations are "business as usual" creates a surreal tech bubble. While these companies paint a picture of impenetrable internal stability, the mounting list of global restrictions suggests that operating a "closed" ecosystem is becoming an increasingly expensive and lonely hobby.

this is just performative theater. they barely have any assets in the uk, so this is just for the headlines. zero real impact on their actual business model.

lol, good luck trying to pay for your groceries with 'sanction-proof' internal systems when the rest of the world shuts the door on you.
