OpenAI, Microsoft and Vercel drop universal plugin standard for AI agents
Tech giants like OpenAI and Microsoft are finally stopping their endless formatting civil wars to build one single standard for AI extensions. It turns out even silicon valley lords got tired of rewriting code six times.
The newly launched Agent Plugins specification version 1.0.0 establishes a single file structure and manifest for AI skills and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. Development teams behind Vercel, AWS, GitHub, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Cursor collaborated on the open standard to eliminate custom directory structures for every single client tool.
Instead of replacing existing host platforms, the standard focuses strictly on packaging and discovery rather than managing the full runtime lifecycle. Distribution, user permissions, custom hooks, and platform-specific commands remain under the control of individual providers, preventing complete corporate anarchy while saving engineers from endless copy-pasting.
Initial native support spans across ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Kiro, and Visual Studio Code. Developers can now build a single AI skill or server once and deploy it instantly across all compatible environments without maintaining isolated wrapper repositories.
This initiative builds directly on top of the rapidly growing MCP ecosystem, mirroring how package managers like npm or pip previously solved fragmentations in web and software development.
Tech monopolies rarely agree on anything unless maintaining separate formats becomes too expensive even for their bottomless budgets. Universal standards usually herald either a massive boom in independent developer tools or an impending wave of massive corporate consolidation.
