Vibe Coding is Destroying Silicon Valley Engineering Teams
Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das reports that the push for AI-assisted coding is creating a massive civil war between lazy coders and burned-out artisans. It is truly a visionary era where we pay humans to debug chatbots instead of writing code.
The workplace reality has fractured into two distinct camps: the so-called lazy coders who dump every task onto AI, and the weary craftsmen who have to fix the mess left behind. The AI-driven flood of code is forcing senior developers to spend their days as glorified janitors, scrubbing through machine-generated errors that nobody actually understands. This endless cycle of oversight is draining the life out of technical roles, making veteran engineers feel like their hard-earned skills are being traded for cheap prompts.
Big tech firms, especially those long in the tooth, are pushing for doubled output while actual business value remains stubbornly flat. Anthropic engineering lead Fiona Fung noted that relying on these agents leads to professional isolation, prompting companies to desperately schedule group lunches and hackathons just to remind people how to talk to each other. The craft isn't just evolving; it is being ground into a fine powder to satisfy a dashboard metric.
The irony of hiring expensive experts just to babysit a digital parrot is clearly lost on the C-suite. As the gap between the code-prompters and the code-fixers widens, the industry is essentially paying to turn its most talented employees into depressed quality assurance testers for algorithms that don't know the difference between a feature and a disaster.
