xAI Becomes SpaceXAI as Rocket Giant Absorbs AI Ambitions

Original version ·

The developer of Grok has officially adopted the SpaceXAI banner following its absorption into SpaceX, where capital spending on machine learning now vastly outstrips rockets and satellites.

Artificial intelligence startup xAI has officially rebranded as SpaceXAI. The company signaled the transition on X, changing its handle to @SpaceXAI and publishing an animation showing the startup's original logo folding into the new corporate insignia.

The name change formalizes an operational consolidation first outlined by Elon Musk, who previously announced that the maker of the Grok chatbot would be dissolved directly into SpaceX. The rocket manufacturer acquired xAI earlier in the year, following an earlier 2025 reorganization that linked the AI lab with X Corp. Under this umbrella, SpaceX now houses aerospace hardware, social networking, and model development under one balance sheet.

The corporate reshuffle follows SpaceX's public listing on the US market, which raised $75 billion at an estimated valuation of $1.77 trillion. Filings tied to the offering demonstrated that SpaceX has effectively pivoted its capital allocations toward computing: the company logged $12.7 billion in capital expenditures on AI in 2025. That figure more than tripled its spending on launch infrastructure and communications, including Starlink.

While the AI division operates at a net loss, SpaceX is aggressively leasing infrastructure to offset overhead. The company secured monthly hosting commitments for its Colossus supercomputing clusters from Anthropic ($1.25 billion per month) and Google ($920 million per month). SpaceX also announced a $60 billion purchase of Anysphere, the creator of the coding assistant Cursor.

The engineering workload remains steep. Musk acknowledged that Grok required a ground-up rebuild due to fundamental flaws. Meanwhile, SpaceX has told investors it intends to launch AI-enabled compute satellites into orbit as early as 2028.

so anthropic is paying spacex 1.25b a month just to keep their models alive while grok gets rewritten from scratch for the third time lol
