Yandex Disk Cuts Free Desktop Sync on Windows and macOS

Original version ·

The cloud storage service keeps browser access free, but running its desktop client now demands a paid Yandex 360 subscription after users allegedly transferred too many large files.

Starting June 3, 2026, Yandex began stripping cloud synchronization from the free desktop versions of Yandex Disk on Windows and macOS. The move converts a long-standing baseline feature into a paid perk, locking background syncing behind a Yandex 360 subscription.

Under the policy communicated through in-app banners, free tier users retain access to their remote files via a web browser and mobile clients. The desktop application itself does not stop launching, but it will only open files that are already cached locally on the computer. Restoring full background synchronization requires a paid Yandex 360 plan, which starts at 166 rubles per month for 200 GB.

The company attributed the restriction to rising server loads, claiming that users increasingly rely on the desktop client to transfer large files. To cushion the shift, Yandex offered an 80% discount on Yandex 360 for the first three months.

Online reception has been sharply critical, with users noting that local folder synchronization has been the core reason to install a dedicated desktop client rather than relying on a browser tab.
